The Transdisciplinary Initiative for Global Sustainability (TIGS) engages in "problem structuring" to give structural form to complex, wide-ranging global environmental issues in order to give structural form to a global sustainability strategy (problem structuring). This involves taking a comprehensive overview of problems and clarifying their structure and mutual relationships. To overcome the limitations of conventional individualized sciences and technologies, TIGS engages in "academic structuring" in order to comprehensively link existing individual academic fields and takes a comprehensive, practical approach to problem solving.
By utilizing the resources of IR3S research centers located in Asia, TIGS engages in research focused on sustainability in Asia, an issue of decisive significance to global sustainability.
Through "problem structuring" and "academic structuring", TIGS will publicly announce social designs and policies that will facilitate the realization of a sustainable society.
